This is Thomas during the bus tour he gave of the Geesala and Tallaghanduff Munnellys (during the reunion).
He has a ton of knowledge regarding many of the Munnelly families - including where in the world they emigrated! (ie: England, Australia, Chicago, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Montana, and
West Virginia!)

Hi, I live in Toronto Canada. My mothers name is Anne Monely. She was born in Durham England. Her Father's name was James from Co. Mayo. I think she is part of this clan. Would be so nice to connect with a bit of family history as I am a first generation Canadian. We know of the reunion this summer. My sister Mary
Della Mora has been in touch. My uncle Jim passed away this past summer and mom (91) is the only sibling left. If you fancy, kindly be in touch.

Hi Nora,
Thanks so much for your message! Monely is definitely one of the spelling variations for Munnelly (there are several), and if you're family originates in Mayo, I'm sure you are part of the clan! The best way I know to get your family history going, and then to make connections with other Munnellys (etc), is to write down as much as your mother can remember about her family....anything at all may be a clue to help make connections (names of family - including ones who marry in), dates, towns, schools, churches, where people emigrated to, etc). From my experience, people remember different things at different times. You may talk to your Mom one day and she'll remember one set of things, and another day it will be other things...so have several conversations. Pictures and family stories may jog her memory as well. With her being the last of her generation, you'll want to get as much information as possible - as soon as possible, (I'm assuming she's mentally alert). The time spent together revisiting her past will be special for both of you! Please let me know how that goes, then the next step I can help you with is organizing the information she gives you.
Are you, or anyone in your family, familiar with FaceBook? If so, there is a group called 'Munnelly Connection' woth over 150 members that have Munnelly roots - you'd enjoy looking at that (or even become a member yourself).
By the way - do you know any Houlsbys from Durham? That's a major line of my family tree - originate in South Shields.

Hi Kathy,
Thanks for your reply. I'll talk to mom this week and scribe all of her information. My sister Mary and my cousin Jim Tumilty (Wilmslow, Cheshire) have been in contact with members od the family. My mom's cousin Patrick Donahue lived in New York city and was the only relative we met in North America. It's pretty cool to connect with you. I'll join the facebook line and see if I can't get more information. Do you live in England? My sister travels there often and we have many links to our family in the UK? Thanks so much Kathy.

Dear Tom,
I came across your interesting website and wonder if you could possibly throw some light on a longstanding mystery in my family.
My maternal grandfather, Joseph McDonnell, was born in England in 1873 to parents who hailed from Co. Mayo. His father Anthony married Helen (or Ellen) Munnelly around 1862, either in England or possibly in Kiltane, Co. Mayo - they certainly moved to England around the time of the marriage. Anthony apparently died in England and Helen moved back to Ireland, where I’m told that she ran a tearoom in Hill Street, Ballina. Joseph was raised in Ireland but moved to Scotland, where he married in 1897 and accordingly to his marriage cert., Helen was alive then but other than that, I know nothing about her.
I have no documentary records relating to any of them - only the sketchy (and often fanciful) reminiscences of long-dead relatives. There was some talk of "the Munnelly stables" but I haven't found any evidence of them.
If you have any info. in your records regarding Helen, I would be delighted to hear from you. Thank you and I hope that this does not inconvenience you too much.

Sorry for the delay. I am an amateur at this internet. I have no information on your family. I have not heard of the Munnelly stables. My good friend Mary Munnelly (MK) lives near Ballina. I will give you her email address . She has a lot of info on the Munnellys in the Ballina area. Another way is to write a letter to the letters page of the Western People Ballina, a local north Mayo paper.
